Energy support package unveiled

Prime Minister Liz Truss has announced a package of measures to shield both households and the business sector from soaring energy bills.

Speaking in the Commons on 8 September, the Prime Minister said that an “energy price guarantee” will limit the average annual household bill to £2,500 in each of the next two years. She also said businesses would receive “equivalent support” although only for six months, with further targeted help for “vulnerable industries” when that period ends.

Business groups welcomed the news which will bring relief to millions of businesses, although some did note that the announcement was “sparse on detail.”

British Chambers of Commerce Director General Shevaun Haviland said, “The BCC welcomes this quick and positive intervention. The new Prime Minister has listened to firms and is providing a strong package of support. It will give businesses some financial certainty on the outlook for the next six months. It is crucial that there is a review at three months so there is time to plan for the end of the six-month period.”
